Ink

Beginners should start with very hard, pitch-like, ink such as 1803 from one of the suppliers listed.

This ink is used first on the matrix and is often the only ink needed if working only in black.

For working up finer tones or warming or cooling black, small amounts of artists’ tube paints may be used, with or without thickening with artists’ pigments.

Rosin, beeswax, paraffin wax, chalk, Epsom salts, linseed oil, artist’s medium and dryers may be used sparingly to thin or thicken the inks.
